Reservations in India: Is it an overkill?

October 31, 2006 PV 1 comment

Are reservations for minorities & others in India, crucifying the very essence of its intent? Anybody from outside that spectrum would definitely say ‘YES’. It might not be a surprise, even if a part of that spectrum also thinks the same. That being said, nobody would deny the fact that there is a spectrum of people out there who are deprived of the resources needed to achieve their goals in life. While everybody agrees, that we as a country should be able to do whatever we can to help this spectrum, so that we can move forward as a unified country. The only contentious issue in this sensitive discussion is who are the right people that deserve this so called “reservation”.

Everybody would probably agree if this reservation was implemented more throughout the whole spectrum of the population irrespective of religion/race/caste but considering only the financial need of an individual. There could be many such solutions which would benefit the right people but would any one of them materialize in a country where policies are more politically biased and just etched out for the gains of a select few!
