Plight of other games in India

September 26, 2007 PV Leave a comment

Why is a T20 cup win in cricket celebrated so wildly than the Asia cup win in hockey? Because not a whole lot of Indians are aware that there are other games we play. There has never been a complete commitment by the government to support any other game because they do not generate the same amount of revenue as cricket. Consider the fact that the state run DD network fights the hell out if they are not given the rights to show cricket games played in India. Sorry for crying out loud, but I’ve never seen them do the same with any other games played at a national level. Why is that? Its all about the money & the limelight that comes with it. Look at articles about the politicians basking in the glory of the T20 win, successfully pushing the actual players into the background. Read an article here where the president of IHF (Indian Hockey Federation) & its players are crying foul at this unfair treatment. Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying its the people’s fault. It should be the role of the sports ministry & its idiotic politicians to provide an opportunity for bodies of other games to establish an infrastructure & maybe a model for the game to succeed. If that means utilizing the revenues from one game to help another, so be it. Not sure when that day is gonna come.

Perfect Finish to a Grand Finale

September 24, 2007 PV Leave a comment

It was a thrilling finish to a dream Twenty 20 final.  It also was a much needed boost to cricket & its fans after the lopsided finals of the past 2 World Cup’s. Although India held their nerve at the end, both teams played exceptionally well to put on an amazing show. Kudos to India! & Well Played Pakistan!

T20 – Grand Finale

September 23, 2007 PV Leave a comment

After a disappointing run in the ICC one day world cup earlier this year, both India & Pakistan have put on a spirited performance to reach the finals of the T20 world cup. This definitely is a dream finale for fans of both the cricket obsessed nations. But like any other game, there will be a looser at the end of the day tomorrow. It will be interesting to see how the fans of the loosing side react.

Money Management

Mint is a cool new money management site that was awarded TechCrunch40’s top company award. The features they offer look pretty cool & intuitive. Although, the security practices & standards they cite for aggregating data sound pretty safe, part of me is still skeptical. I don’t think I can resist the convenience it offers for too long. Maybe the best part could turn out to be, the fact that they say you can take or remove your data whenever you want (unlike the benevolent sounding Google!).

Time to Hibernate

September 15, 2007 PV Leave a comment

After one of the hottest month’s in recent history, it started to get a little chilly in St.Louis. Looks like winter’s here this year without a warning. Are these rapid changes in climate also a sign of global warming? Don’t know, but weather in this part of the country has always been fickle. I guess it is time to hibernate.
