Gilly’s Retirement

January 26, 2008 PV Leave a comment

It was a shocker probably for many to see Gilchrist announce his retirement this week. But this would be the best time for him to sign off on a high note. It just makes the whole story just incredible to listen & probably re-tell. After Ganguly was dropped last week from the one day side it was a real pity to see everybody cry out in India. In turn it would have been a lot more compelling if he announced his retirement after an incredible return from oblivion. Now for him to wait for another chance to sign off on a high would be just painful to watch for his admirers. It probably is not in the Indian nature to know when it is your time to say good bye! Just look at Steve Waugh & now Adam Gilchrist..

Incredible Win!

January 21, 2008 PV Leave a comment

Anybody following Indian cricket for the past decade or so would never have dreamt of a win in Perth. It would have been only natural for them to fold & surrender meekly after the events of Sydney. That they won & more so by displaying a brilliant team effort has to be a true revelation. If they can sustain the effort in Adelaide has to be seen, but they definitely deserve a billion kudos for their effort in Perth.

For the selectors to drop Ganguly from the one day series after this & not include Dravid & VVS is a bold decision. It can back fire in their face, but if they can back the young guys even through their failures then they would have truly turned a corner. BCCI has always been known for its internal politics & its ability to sway the ICC with its financial clout, but if it keeps making these selection decisions without a set agenda for the team’s success they might be in danger of loosing the very source that gives it all its power.

Finally!

Wow! Finally, Oracle got what it wanted. With BEA under its wings they can now offer a wide variety of middle ware services too. But with more & more companies taking the open source route & with Sun’s purchase of MYSQL (ironically on the same day) stressing that point was it Oracle’s gain or is it the other way around? Time will tell!

Thoughts ’bout Iowa primaries

January 3, 2008 PV 2 comments

There is some aura of likability around Obama while on the other hand the only quality displayed by Clinton is arrogance. Listening to each of their speeches after the Iowa primaries, some how Obama’s speech felt more honest & hopeful. Of course being an immigrant I probably do not understand all the issues that need to be addressed or that need attention. But Obama although inexperienced seems like a person who can lead & inspire people into taking on something beyond reach. After all the predictions for so long to the contrary it is good to see Obama turn his campaign around and win Iowa. Let’s see how the rest of America feels about him..
